COLUMBIA, S.C. -- If you're a dog lover, you'll understand why Elizabeth Todd cradles her chihuahua "Poppy" like a baby.
"Poppy's just my heart," said Elizabeth. "They become part of your family, part of your life."
You'll also understand why Monday was so terrible.
"It tore my heart out to think something had happened to him," said Elizabeth.
Her 9-year-old son Tim was there. He remembers hearing something awful.
"It was a terrible yelp," said Tim. "Real loud and we heard wings flapping and we looked back and Poppy was flying right up there."
Some kind of large bird had picked up the 3-pound chihuahua.
"It kind of looked like he was in both of his talons and the bird was flying up and he was looking down and whining," said Tim.
Merry Christmas, Officer...
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are searching for the driver of a black Mercedes who handed an officer marijuana and then sped away from a checkpoint in north Charlotte Friday morning.
It happened during the "All Hands on Deck" initiative by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's North Division.
Patrol officers are trying to bring security back to the Poplar Springs neighborhood after it's been hit by six break-ins in recent weeks.
"As I go out to walk sometimes, I often see them coming through the neighborhood and that gives us peace of mind. At least we know we're not forgotten," said resident Larry Jones.
During the All Hands on Deck initiative, officers will saturate the neighborhood for 24 hours, talking with residents and setting up safety checkpoints.
Ethel Humphries says her door was broken during an attempted robbery, but the alarm scared off the potential robbers. Police followed up with her on Friday.
DRUGS MAN!!!
PASCO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A Pasco County woman was arrested after deputies said she tried to smuggle drugs to her husband in jail.
Investigators said Virginia Jacobs put oxycodone and morphine under stamps on seven postcards, then sent them to her husband in the Pasco County Jail.
According to Bay News 9's partner paper, the St. Petersburg Times, a jail worker noticed the stamps were bumpy and found the drugs.
Jacobs was arrested and charged with eight counts of introduction of contraband into a detention facility and failing to appear in court for driving with a suspended or revoked license.
Her husband, Robert, has been in the Pasco County Jail since November. Jacobs said he asked her to send the drugs. (Editor's note: At least they'll be together??!?!?!?!) 0_o
Big Brother Spies Your Child's Vajayjay
House Majority Leader Kevin Garn announced Saturday he was resigning from the Utah Legislature, two days after revelations of a nude hot-tubbing incident with a minor 25 years ago and a payment to keep it quiet.
"After discussing this matter with my family, I have decided that it is in the best interests of them, my colleagues and the people of Utah," Garn said in his letter of resignation, submitted to House Speaker David Clark, R-Santa Clara, Saturday morning.
Cheryl Maher, who was the teen in the hot tub with Garn in 1985, said she has felt "a lot of peace" since coming forward with her story.
"I hope Kevin knows I never meant to hurt anyone, but the truth had to come out," she said Saturday morning in a phone interview from her New Hampshire home. By working with women in crisis or the mentally ill "he can turn this thing around to something positive. ... He could really help a lot of people," she said. (Editor's note: Shooting himself in the skull would be extremely helpful.)

The Teacher Who Should Be History
Rex Roland, a Teacher at Enka Middle School in North Carolina, in Trouble for Calling Student a Loser on her Paper
Rex Roland, who teaches sixth grade at Enka Middle School in Candler, North Carolina, said he was joking when he called one of his students a 'loser' on her paper, but her mother Patty Clement does not see it that way.
She wants Rex Roland to be suspended.
This is not the first time Mr. Roland has called that student a loser either. Back in November he also wrote 'loser' in red ink on the girl's paper and this time he wrote 'minus 20% for being a loser' and then underlined 'loser' twice. ABC has a video report of the story.
Patty Clement complained about the conduct in November when it happened the first time, but now it has happened again, she wants Rex Roland to be suspended. (Editor's note: How about dropped feet first into a swamp full of angry crocodiles, we'll see who the LOSER IS. You do NOT do that to a child.)
